Checking In Before My Second Term

Updated: 6 days ago

I’ve just returned to Denver to begin creating next year’s budget, and as always, I’m ready to work on your behalf. This year, however, brings a unique set of challenges—one that will require our collective focus, ingenuity, and resolve. I’m honored to share that I’ve been reappointed to serve on the Joint Budget Committee for another two years. This committee plays a critical role in shaping our state’s financial future, and I’m eager to continue advocating for policies that help ensure Colorado remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be participating in a series of budget hearings and briefings to better understand the financial landscape and hear directly from state agencies. These discussions will help us identify where cuts may need to be made and where we can prioritize investment.

The state is facing an estimated $1.2 billion budget shortfall, and we will have to make some tough decisions to balance the books. In addition, voters approved a 350-million-dollar ballot initiative for our police officers, which will have to be factored into our planning as well. The challenge is not just about closing the gap—it’s about doing so while continuing to provide essential services to Coloradans. Our schools, healthcare system, public safety programs, and infrastructure all depend on thoughtful funding, and I’m committed to finding solutions that protect these vital services.

I have also been researching bill ideas for the next legislative session, which begins on January 8th, 2025. In the next newsletter, I will provide more detail about the 5 prime bills I am planning on introducing. If there are any questions or concerns you have ahead of the session, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Thank you for your continued trust and support.
